So, where is the source?

As you may or not know, I was at Fosdem this year. I gathered some useful information and feedback to continue the development of my translation tool, narro. About two weeks ago I've applied for a project on mozdev.org. Well, it ain't coming. Anyway I've discovered that google is offering svn on their code.google.com as opposed to mozdev, so I thought of going there. I've registered for a project and surprise, surprise, someone has a project called narro on sourceforge. Google is kind enough to not allow confusion, so I went on and asked Google to ask the sourceforge narro project owner permission that I could use the narro on code.google.com. As of today I'm waiting.

You may be wondering why Narro. Well it's a Latin word and it means also „to make known”. So I liked that and felt like by translating, I'm making the software known to people.

Right now, Narro uses Drupal's user management system. Also it uses qcodo and ZendFramework. I'm thinking using Drupal is a little too much overhead. Maybe some people don't like it. And the install procedure is pretty long this way. I'm going to write a simple user management system that will be included in Narro.

I have no problem with posting the source code right now, but it would be pretty unusable, so while waiting for approval from the sourceforge narro project owner, I'll take Narro out of Drupal and make a initial first release possible for the brave ones. Another thing is that I have included several functionalities that are specific to Romanian; I have to put those in optional plugins.

If you're reading this and you are a localizer, please be so kind and leave a comment so I may contact you when this first release is done. You may test it and receive my help to install and use it. Also this way you could help further development of Narro. Right now Narro can handle dtd, ini, properties, gettext (po) and open office sdf format. On the go there's transifex support for export/import operations. Any other format can be added.

Haven't seen narro yet? You can test it here: http://narro.maimult.ro/qdrupal/narro_project_list.php
Please use the Firefox 3 (for Narro tests) project for testing adding suggestions. Don't worry, I'll delete them if you don't or can't.

Salutare,
